Per the official invitation by the American Society of Nutrition (ASN) and the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN), the Chinese Journal of Clinical Nutrition (CJCN) delegation attended the International Collaboration Meetings in San Diego, California, USA, on April 23th, 2012. During the meeting, both American and Chinese partners had very productive discussions on several issues on collaborations. They also reached a consensus through a discussion, and signed a memorandum of cooperation.

The participants from American part included Dr. John Courtney, chief executive officer of the ASN; Dr. Teresa Davis, the president of the ASN; Dr. Dennis Bier, editor-in-chief, the AJCN; Dr. Catharine Ross, editor-in-chief, Journal of Nutrition; Ms. Karen King, vice president of publishing, ASN; Mr. Darren Early, director of Journal Editorial and Production Operations, ASN, and Dr. Xiang-dong WANG, director of Asia Scientific Program, ASN. The Chinese delegation lead by Dr. JIANG Zhu-ming, the editor-in-chief of the CJCN and other members including Ms. ZHONG Zi-hong, director of the editorial department and deputy editor-in-chief, CJCN; Dr. MAO Yi-lei, deputy editor-in-chief, CJCN and Dr. YU Kang, deputy editor-in-chief, CJCN.

The meeting began with Dr. Teresa Davis, Dr. John Courtney, and Ms. Karen King giving a brief speech to welcome the CJCN delegation. On behalf of the ASN, Dr. Davis presented a certificate of appreciation to the CJCN. During the meeting, the two sides had an in-depth discussion on cooperation matters, consensus was reached and signed a memorandum of cooperation, which was briefed as follows:

(1) Establish a strong long-term, collaborative relations between the AJCN and CJCN.

(2) Hold the first ASN-AJCN-CJCN authorship training workshop in September 24-25, 2012 in Beijing, China. The aim of the workshop is to provide guidance, assistance, and training on how to design scientific research in China and how to write high quality scientific papers in English.

(3) AJCN and CJCN will promote scientific communication between two countries in the field of clinical nutrition. The mutual publishing English abstracts of AJCN or CJCN after review/selection by the working group from the two sides in their respective publications (and website) have been recommended.

At the meeting, Dr. Jiang on behalf of the CJCN gave a presentation entitled "Historical review of CJCN and the odyssey of clinical nutrition in China". He raised several issues regarding how to improve the impact factor of the CJCN, such as manuscript sources and the promoted peer review system. He introduced three guiding principles "marketing-digital-international modernizations" to American colleagues. He pointed out that there is a huge gap between the CJCN and the AJCN in terms of impact number (0.88 vs. 6.6) and the purpose of the visiting of the CJCN delegation is to learn from the AJCN and collaborate with the AJCN on the authors training workshops. He also indicated the current dilemma and the future vision of the CJCN. The representatives of the ASN have a more in-depth understanding of the CJCN and also have confidence on the potential cooperation with the CJCN. The ASN representatives were interested in the workshop on "Nutritional risk-under nutrition-support-outcome-cost/effectiveness (NUSOC), multi-center, sharing database" held jointly by the CJCN and the Chinese Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (CSPEN) for 29 times. The AJCN editor indicated the importance by promoting "with the goal of improving clinical outcomes of clinical nutrition (outcome-based clinical nutrition research: important for the future)". The meeting ended in a friendly atmosphere and both sides also realized the challenges on the collaboration and the actual work in near future, in order to achieve substantive progress.
